Getting Started - Volunteering with L.A. Works Back To Main

Register as an L.A. Works Volunteer
L.A. Works offers a variety of ways for volunteers to get involved, whether for just a couple of hours or as an ongoing commitment to service. But first, you must register and/or log in.

photoFinding Volunteer Opportunities
Look through the volunteer calendar to find one-time volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups. Most of the calendar projects take place on evenings during the week or during the day on the weekends and only require a few hours. The majority of these projects are managed by L.A. Works for our non-profit partners and are led by a trained volunteer Project Leader. You can sign up for one of these projects directly on our website by clicking on the SIGN ME UP button (unless the project is at capacity, indicated by a red dot).

Browse our ongoing opportunities section to find ways to support the programming needs of our many community partners. These opportunities are all coordinated directly by our community partners. If you are interested in an opportunity you can click on the HAVE AGENCY CONTACT ME button and the partner agency should respond to your inquiry within 72 hours with more information.

You can Search for projects by location, date or impact area. You can also search by skills and interests or find projects suitable for specific ages.

If you are interested in assuming a more active role in your community, you can become an L.A. Works Project Leader. Project Leaders assume leadership over one of our managed projects, handling programming, communications and volunteer management responsibilities. By attending our Project Leader Training you will learn how easy it is to lead on an issue that you care deeply about and make a difference in your community!

L.A. Works also manages long-term opportunities such as "Let's Read" and "TeamWorks" that provide a richer, more comprehensive volunteer experience for you and the agencies we work with. These projects happen periodically and are featured on our homepage when they occur.

Volunteering as a Group
L.A. Works makes it easy to volunteer with family members, friends or colleagues. Click here to learn how to create a volunteer team and then sign your team up for a project.

Youth Volunteerism
While L.A. Works projects are always suitable for volunteers age 18 and older, many of our projects are also open to minors. The description page of each project will state the age requirement. If a project is open to minors, then they will need to bring and have signed by a parent/guardian a Volunteer Agreement & Release For Minor Child Form in order to volunteer. Minors under 13 years of age also need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Children under the age of 13 are unable to sign-up for projects on the website (Federal Law prohibits this). Because of this, if you would like to bring children under the age of 13 then sign yourself up for the project, and then email the project leader to tell them the names and ages of any children you are bringing along. Or you can form a family team and sign up your child(ren) as team members!

To search for age-appropriate projects for your family, go to our Search page and use the "Search for projects where a volunteer who is ___ years old can volunteer" search parameter.

Accessibility for All – People with Disabilities
L.A. Works welcomes volunteers of all levels of ability! As a participant in the Tarjan Center Service Inclusion Project, we  strives to make service and volunteerism equally accessible to people with and without disabilities, and firmly believe that we can strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving ALL in service. We will provide reasonable accommodations for our managed volunteer projects whenever possible with advance notice. For more information please email Gil Gonzales or call 323-224-6510.
