L. A. WORKS
Engaging Volunteers
Building Stronger Communities
Developing Leaders
L.A. Works is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, volunteer action center that creates and implements hands-on community service projects throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Founded in 1991, our mission consists of three principal points:
- To increase volunteer participation in community service projects;
- To provide our nonprofit partners with access to volunteer labor and other resources; and
- To educate and encourage people to engage in the broader social issues affecting the greater Los Angeles Community.
Working together with hundreds of nonprofit partners, large and small businesses throughout Los Angeles, and tens of thousands of committed volunteers, L.A. Works has made a significant, visible and lasting contribution to Los Angeles. L.A. Works has:
- Contributed over one million volunteer hours of service to Los Angeles
- Spent over 80,000 hours reading books to children and at-risk youth, 65,000 hours tutoring and 50,000 hours providing activities for the elderly
- Served over 10,000 meals to the homeless, and
- Painted hundreds of murals at schools and nonprofit partners.
Engaging Volunteers
- Managed volunteer opportunities: L.A. Works manages more than 80 volunteer opportunities each month. These projects are led by trained L.A. Works project leaders at our nonprofits partner sites throughout Los Angeles. Examples of projects include building wheelchairs, activities with children at transitional living facilities, spending time with seniors at senior living facilities, park and beach conservation, and sorting food at the foodbank.
- Community Connections: L.A. Works invites volunteers to connect directly to our nonprofit partners to help support their programming needs. These opportunities often require a longer-term commitment from volunteers, and include mentoring at-risk youth and serving as hospice care assistants.
- Days of Service: L.A. Works coordinates large-scale, days of service for 500 to thousands of volunteers, including MLK Day of Service, L.A. Works Day, and Earth Day.
- BusinessWorks: L.A. Works coordinates custom-designed service (or sponsorship) opportunities that fit the interests and needs of our corporate and community partners – from serving the homeless, painting murals, planting a community garden and reading to children to large-scale makeovers of entire schools and community centers.
Building Stronger Communities
- Service Inclusion Initiative: L.A. Works firmly believes that we strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving all in service! We seek to make service and volunteerism equally accessible to people with disabilities by providing reasonable accommodations for our managed volunteer projects whenever possible.
- Volunteerism in Immigrant Communities: L.A. Works has shown itself at the forefront of efforts to work with communities with large immigrant populations to promote local volunteerism as one pathway toward achieving real community self-reliance.
- Emergency Volunteer Center: L.A. Work will provide community support in the event of an emergency or disaster. We are currently developing our capacity to serve as an Emergency Volunteer Center to coordinate spontaneous volunteers who want to help in response to a disaster and utilize them in addressing the emergency needs of communities throughout Los Angeles.
Developing Leaders
- Project Leader Training: L.A. Works provides Project Leader Training for volunteers who want to lead on an issue that they care deeply about and make a difference in their community. Project Leaders assume leadership of our managed projects, taking care of programming, communications and volunteer management responsibilities.
