About HandsOn Tech: HandsOn Tech (HOT), a partnership between Points of Light and Google, is a program that seeks to provide free technology trainings and coaching to nonprofits serving low-income communities. Twenty-eight AmeriCorps VISTAs placed in eight cities will engage skilled volunteers to provide a series of one-time workshops on tech topics for nonprofits, as well as more in-depth coaching and implementation for NPOs especially in need of assistance.
Position Description: As a skilled volunteer for HandsOn Tech, you will provide the crucial technological expertise on which the program depends. You will lead a workshop (or workshops!) to give nonprofit members basic familiarity with technological tools that can dramatically improve their efficiency and effectiveness. Some general topics for trainings we want to provide (we welcome more ideas too):
Website Development and Maintenance
Cloud Computing (Google Apps, Dropbox, Office 365)
Database Programs (e.g. Salesforce)
Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, etc.)
All the tools!
We’re looking for people with a wide variety of IT or media skills who want to use their expertise to build the capacity of nonprofits to eradicate poverty in greater Los Angeles. The expertise we are seeking is not limited to topics list above; even the simplest of technological tools can revolutionize an organization’s operations.
Responsibilities: Volunteers who lead technology trainings will be in charge of developing content for a workshop on a specific topic, and for leading the workshop itself. HandsOn Tech LA will be responsible for organizing the event, securing facilities and advertising to the nonprofit community. All you have to do is bring your skills and share them!
Expertise in the use of one or more of the tech tools listed above, or others that might be useful to a nonprofit.
The desire to use this expertise to expand the ability of LA’s nonprofits to help those in need.
The ability to make the time commitment agreed upon with HOT staff
Organize and deliver the material and learning objectives for the arranged topic
Be available for meetings and discussions with HOT staff as needed
Equipment Requirements: Personal transportation and personal computer. Any other equipment you deem appropriate for the training you lead that you are comfortable using.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per workshop plus additional planning time and check in meetings with HandsOn Tech staff. Volunteer Trainers are not required to lead more than one training.
Time Frame: Trainings are held every month between January and October 2014. We are always looking for volunteers to be trainers and are accepting ongoing interest.
Location: TBD. There is the opportunity of delivering workshops either in person or online via a webinar or video conferencing program depending on the nature of the topic.
Benefits: The benefits of donating your time as a skilled volunteer with HandsOn Tech Los Angeles include the knowledge that the skills and expertise you pass along will be used to improve the lives of thousands. L.A. Works’ network of nonprofits includes organizations that serve low-income communities throughout LA county, and your unique skillset will allow them to expand their reach and the quality of their services, and bring us that much closer to ending poverty. Additionally, you will build your skill-set in planning and delivering trainings, meet diverse nonprofits throughout LA County and learn about essential elements of the nonprofit sector. And of course, you’ll get that warm, fuzzy feeling of helping out the community!
