Volunteer for Women's Rights

*BEAUTY AND CHARM: LIFTING WOMEN'S SPIRITS
The residents of Women’s Village are in various stages of the journey to overcome homelessness and other challenges. Once a month, L.A. Works volunteers come to Women's Village to support their bravery with a little pampering and companionship by providing basic manicures, hand scrubs, mud masks and hand massages. Volunteers don't have to be experts at giving manicures. This experience is more about bonding with the women and giving them an opportunity to connect with others. The women really enjoy this service because it allows them to look their best for job interviews. Sometimes there's also karaoke and snacks.

*EMPOWERING ADULTS: LIFESKILLS WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG SINGLE MOMS
The young adults from PATH Gramercy, ages 18 to 24, will attend regular workshops on a wide variety of topics related to personal growth and self-development. Providing hands-on strategies, the objective of the workshops is to better equip the young mothers with valuable knowledge, skills, and resources that help improve their self-esteem and confidence. Volunteers will help foster a positive, interactive, and fun learning environment while building mentorship relationships with the young adults!

VICTIM SUPPORT VOLUNTEER
Volunteers provide support to victims of domestic violence involved in misdemeanor criminal court process, and facilitate referrals to resources to address the impact of the abuse.

*LEND A HAND: PROVIDE SUPPORT TO TRANSITIONAL FAMILIES
Alexandria House is a non-profit transitional residence providing safe and supportive housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelter to permanent housing. L.A. Works volunteers support the staff at Alexandria House in maintaining a safe and positive atmosphere for the woman and children living there. Volunteers help with gardening, organizing the garage, cleaning the kitchen, sorting food and clothing, and preparing activities for neighborhood events.

VOLUNTEER HOTLINE ADVOCATE
Under the direction of the Emergency Response Manager from the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking, the Volunteer Hotline Advocate serves as a front line responder to victims of human trafficking who may need services as well as to community members who have questions or wish to report suspected human trafficking.

Educate and Advocate

A look back at history shows that women have made great strides in the fight for equality, including women’s suffrage and inroads in equal opportunity in the workplace and education.

Despite the tremendous progress made in the struggle for gender equality, women still face violence, discrimination, and institutional barriers to equal participation in society.

Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, the ACLU Women’s Rights Project pushes for change and systemic reform in institutions that perpetuate discrimination against women, focusing its work in the areas of employment, violence against women, and education.
