In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., this year we'll be serving at George Washington Carver Middle School.
Impact: Studies have shown that student achievement can be affected either positively or negatively by the school environment. School beautification is a great way to increase morale and motivate students. Beautiful and clean facilities push students in the right direction by giving them an uplifting, positive space to work and grow in. They will come into school knowing that they're worth something because someone took the time to take care of a place they call home for eight or more hours of the day.
Volunteer Project: Volunteers will put their skills to use in various beautification projects throughout the school campus. Our goal is to enhance the learning environment with color, fresh paint, and murals. We would also like to encourage outdoor learning via gardening projects, including building benches for outdoor classrooms and seating.
Date: January 21st, 2018
Location: George Washington Carver Middle School, 4410 McKinley Ave
Time: Please arrive at 9:00 am to check-in at our registration tables.
Waivers & Minors: All volunteers will need to fill out the LAUSD Waiver and the L.A. Works Waiver at the time of registration. Any volunteer under the age of 18 will need to bring and have signed by a parent/guardian an L.A. Works Volunteer Agreement & Release for Minors. Volunteers under the age of 14 must have a parent/guardian with them. Volunteers under the age of 14 cannot create L.A. Works Accounts so parents/guardians must create a Team to sign up their family. See note below under the section "Teams/Groups."
Dress Code: Casual attire and sneakers (sturdy closed-toe shoes). Please wear clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Wear sunscreen, a hat and bring your own eco-friendly water bottle if you have one.
Accessibility: L.A. Works firmly believes that we strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving all in service. If you feel you need accommodations to participate in this project, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Teams/Groups: We encourage groups to join us for the big day. Volunteers are assigned to projects on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee that your group will be able to volunteer for the same project. To increase your chance of volunteering with your group, please come early and arrive together.
