Science Enrichment Program - Vision IN-School

Location: Los Angeles CA, 90095

Date: 1/7/2019 Spots Remaining: 1

Description

Vision IN-School is a unique science enrichment program designed for 5th-6th grade students. The JSEI Affiliates curriculum, originally developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI), continues to receive positive reviews from both students teachers and volunteers year-after-year.

Mission - JSEI Affiliates, the volunteer arm of UCLA Stein Eye Institute, provide professional volunteer guest speakers to involve students in a lively 45-60 minute session covering:

  • Anatomy of the eye
  • Mechanics of vision
  • Problems that interfere with vision and
  • Eye health and safety, including injury prevention

Impact - The presentation will cover illustrating depth perception, optical illusions, and impaired vision and provides interactive learning for the young audience, including a bovine cow eye dissection demonstration. We believe that this program empowers children by giving them knowledge about how their eyes work and informs them about ways to protect their eyes.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities - New volunteers will be paired with experienced program volunteers who have experience with the program curriculum. One-on-one training available upon request. Volunteers will have the option of being a presenter of the PowerPoint presentation or dissection demonstrator or both. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the schools or we carpooling from UCLA. No experience is required

For additional information on becoming a volunteer with the JSEI Affiliates, please contact Shirley Egbert, Volunteer Coordinator or visit our website www.jseiaffiliates.org.
