Quick Overview: Do you have a background in operations leadership for a nonprofit or business? The California Social-Emotional Learning Alliance and the Big EQ Campaign are emerging LA based projects of nonprofit Earthways Foundation whose shared goal is to get game-changing emotional intelligence training and kindred life skills into all schools as a major transformative agent for schools, children and society. We need operational leadership to develop and coordinate a variety of elements, inclujding volunteer teams, events, outeach to the public, media and marketing, business affilations and fundraising., web and social media. Mission or Broader Program Description: Only about 10% of Los Angeles and California schools fully implement the programs and practices of social-emotional learning despite their proven positive effects on academic success as well as mitigating the negative realities of school violence, disengagement, drug usage, digital addiction and suicides. The Earthways project named The California Social Emotional Learning Alliance has a dominantly LA-based membership composed of 200 educators, program providers and members of community organizations who have come together to take grassroots actions to overcome public ignorance of and bureaucratic resistance to implementing these remarkable learnings in all state schools. Earthways companion project, the Big EQ Campaign, is a media--focused advocacy campaign (advertising and public relations) meant to overcome parent and public ignorance of these game-changing programs and practices and drive support for them. Mayor Garcetti is among the campaign's endorsers. Senior leadership of both organizations is provided by Jay Levin, founder of the LA Weekly.
Impact: Probably be hard to have a larger impact on schools and life from a volunteer role. You will be working with quality people and helping them implement a cause they are passionate about because they have seen the amazing positive results on children and into their adult lives. Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: The volunteer will be coordinating a variety of member action teams already in place or being built and well as helping to expand on our current 85 organization members, As with any operational and general management, you would stay aprised of and lead/coordinate the leaders of the instituional efforts listed in the Overview above, helping with recruitment if needed, and also integrate those responsible for information flow.
Requirements: Be very well organized and able to handle details and develop strategic and tactical plans. Be good with people, creative when needed, enjoy a supportive leadership role, and be a self-starter. Bi-lingual in Spanish would be helpful but not a deal breaker if not.
Additional Details: A flexible work availability schedule is of value. As additional funding is required, there would be a possibility to step into a paying position.
Accessibility: Most of this work is virtual as most of the organizing goes on by phone, text, email and video meetings via Zoom - unless you arrange for more face to face meetings. You would work from home or wherever you chose and use your own computer and be reimbursed for any phone expenses or travel..
