Quick Overview: Volunteers assist clients in selecting their food, answers their questions, help them navigate the pantry efficiently, sort boxes of canned items, separate fresh produce into appropriate portions, and ensure proper pantry set up.
Mission or Broader Program Description: Our Mission is to provide working poor families, as well as homeless men, women and children of all ages, with the inner resources and tools to become productive, stable and self-supporting members of the community.
Impact: Last year the Food Pantry provided enough food for clients to prepare 145,000 healthy meals at home; over half of these meals were prepared in households with young children or seniors. The Pantry also offers a variety of classes and workshops that help meet the complex physical, social, and emotional needs of our clients. The program is an important gateway to St. Joseph Center’s array of programs that can help clients make significant progress toward self-sufficiency.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: In addition to helping clients navigate the pantry volunteers will also filter food into the pantry from storage and create pre-packaged “emergency” food bags.
Requirements: 18 years or older, works well with others and available on Fridays from 12:30pm-3:15pm. Bilingual Spanish speakers are a plus. Bilingual Russian speakers greatly needed.
