Mission: To Preserve, Collect, and Interpret the architecture, physical environment, and culture of Southern California during the first 100 years of statehood, (1850 to 1950). We have eight Victorian Era buildings that we use to teach guests about the history of Los Angeles. Structures on the property range in size, architectural style and original location. These buildings and the furnishings/displays we have inside of them allow museum visitors to see what living in this period looked like.
Project Description: Want to encourage people to learn about the history of Los Angeles and what life was like in the past? Become a Heritage Square tour guide and you will be able to show off our beautiful buildings as well as tell the story of the development of Los Angeles.
Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: On tour, you will take people into 6 of the buildings and talk about the exteriors of them all. Our tours are not scripted. Between the training manual and course, you will learn a lot of information about the buildings, who lived in them, LA history, the Victorian lifestyle and more. It is then up to you (with assistance from experienced guides) to distill that information into your own tour. While we do ask that you cover the basics of each building, the majority of what you talk about will be what interests you most thereby giving you the opportunity to introduce our guests to the things you find important.
Time Commitment: Tours are given at 12, 1, 2 & 3pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. As a tour guide, we ask that you give 1 tour or 4 hours per month.
Requirements: Training is required and is offered free of charge! Trainings are held on consecutive Saturday mornings. The first class will be held on July 28th from 9:30 - 11:30am. These classes will teach you about the museum, our buildings and the Victorian lifestyle which you will then use to create your own tour. An interest in history and public speaking are desirable but not necessary.
