Only about 10% of Los Angeles and California schools fully implement the programs and practices of social-emotional learning despite their proven positive effects on academic success as well as mitigating the negative realities of school violence, disengagement, drug usage, digital addiction and suicides. The Earthways project named The California Social Emotional Learning Alliance has a dominantly LA-based membership composed of 200 educators, program providers and members of community organizations who have come together to take grassroots actions to overcome public ignorance of and bureaucratic resistance to implementing these remarkable learnings in all state schools. Earthways companion project, the Big EQ Campaign, is a media--focused advocacy campaign (advertising and public relations) meant to overcome parent and public ignorance of these game-changing programs and practices and drive support for them. Mayor Garcetti is among the campaign's endorsers. Senior leadership of both organizations is provided by Jay Levin, founder of the LA Weekly.
