*TAKE ACTION: Environmental Advocacy Bootcamp

Location: Los Angeles CA, 90031

Date: 3/26/2019 Spots Remaining: 2

What: Don't just talk about change - make a change. Learn about environmental issues and then learn the advocacy skills to combat them.

The Audubon Center at Debs Park is an urban nature center located in Northeast LA. They focus on restoring the natural landscape of Debs Park in order to establish bird-friendly landscapes and sustainable open space for all to enjoy. Their mission is to inspire people to experience, understand and care for the local natural world. Through educational programming, community events, and volunteering, the Center provides opportunity for the local community to engage with the natural landscape and to advocate on its behalf.

Volunteer Project:  Each session, experts will educate volunteers on critical environmental issues and then teach/complete a specific advocacy tool that can be applied to that issue or others.

Unlike a single volunteer experience, long-term advocacy is important for real change to occur. If you have a passion for the environment or advocacy, this volunteer opportunity is for you.

Additional Details:  The Project will be broken down into two sections: (1) Education Section and (2) Advocacy.

(1) Education:  Environmental professionals and community organizers will speak on a critical issue related to the environment, such as:

Park Equity and Access to Greenspace in Urban Settings
Climate Change
Water Conservation
Building Sustainable Cities
Community Resilience and Homelessness

(2) Advocacy: Volunteers will learn a new advocacy skill and will be given time to complete it in the allotted time, such as:

Writing letters to elected officials or news editors
Using social media to influence change
Registering to vote
Conducting in-office meetings with your CA Assembly person
Finding and speaking at local councils

Age Requirement: Volunteers as young as 12 may participate with the knowledge that lecture will be a large component of the event. Volunteers under 18 must come with a completed Minor Waiver Form that has been signed by their legal guardian or they will be unable to participate.

Accessibility: L.A. Works firmly believes that we strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving all in service. If you feel you need accommodations to participate in this project please email us at info@laworks.com.
