Quick Overview: Volunteer as a Coach to "coach" family visits with parents who have been granted weekly supervised visits. Coach will provide support to families and overall assist parent's with ensuring that the visit goes smoothly by providing redirection when needed.
Mission or Broader Program Description: The Family Visitation Center program provides family-friendly environments for parents and their children during supervised visits. A family visitation center is a place where parents and children who have been separated due to abuse and/or neglect can have supervised visits in a setting that is conductive to parent/child interaction and in which they can replicate "normal" family interactions. Friends Of The Family works closely with houses of faith to develop warm and supportive settings so parents are able to bond with their children, enjoy activities that promote healthy relationships, and mmove toward successful reunification.
Impact: Visitation coaches can have immediate and long-term impact through the support and guidance provided to families. Coaches provide an environment of safety while role modeling and motivating parents to do their best. Coaches can provide connection and linkages to much needed resources often making an enormous difference in the struggling family's life.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: The Volunteer Coach is responsible for utilizing a "coaching" model. Volunteers are trained to provide not only safe visits, but to offer support, guidance, positive reinforcement, "cheerleading", modeling of positive interaction and behavior, suggestions for developmentally appropriate play and bonding activities, identification of additional needs of the parents and, most importantly, to offer respect for the parent's role.
Requirements: The Volunteer Coach must be 21 years of age, willing to be fingerprinted and screened, complete 24 hour-no-cost training, and be available for 2 hours per week.
Additional Details: Volunteers should have an interest in working with children and families, and conflict mediation.
