Habitat Enhancement along the L.A. River @ Rattlesnake Park!

Location: Los Angeles CA, 90039

Date: 6/15/2019 Spots Remaining: 5

Quick Overview: Volunteers will be working with Debs Park Conservation Program Coordinator, Cindy Castaneda, to maintain native plant restoration sites at Rattlesnake Park along the L.A. River.

Mission or Broader Program Description: The Audobon Center’s mission is to inspire people to experience, understand and care for the local natural world. The nature-based education and community programs at Debs Park are designed to engage children and their families in the outdoor world, and to give them a personal stake in its protection by making environmental issues relevant to their lives. The Center is operated by Audubon California, a state field program of National Audubon Society, and is a vital part of Audubon’s national outreach initiative to engage Latino audiences. The Center, which is surrounded by predominately Latino neighborhoods, is a unique gathering place and dynamic focal point for outdoor recreation, environmental education and conservation action.

Impact: The Audubon Center at Debs Park is committed to restoring the natural beauty and landscape of Debs Park and parks across L.A. so that people and birds are able to thrive, but we can't do it alone! Volunteers are essential in helping The Center carry out this mission. Our work along the L.A. River is especially important in regards to expanding the reach of the Center, engaging a wider community, and enhancing different habitats across L.A.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: Volunteers will be planting native plants and/or maintaining restoration sites through weeding invasive species, watering, and mulching. Further duties may include trash pick-up, raking, sweeping, etc.

Requirements: Be sure to bring lots of water, sun protection, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty! Remember to wear closed-toe shoes and dress in layers. Volunteers will need to sign a waiver prior to volunteering (MINOR WAIVERADULT WAIVER) - if you are not able to print the waiver beforehand we will also have copies available onsite.
