Title: ScholarMatch is currently recruiting adults with college degrees who would like to mentor first-generation college students through the college application process!
Quick Overview: Volunteers commit to mentoring high school seniors through the college application process, checking in on their progress once a month and/or opt to "drop-in" during our evening college coaching sessions to assist students with all things college related.
Organization Name and Website: ScholarMatch: https://scholarmatch.org/
Mission or Broader Program Description: ScholarMatch’s mission is to make college possible for underserved youth by matching students with donors, resources, colleges and professional networks. ScholarMatch’s services span a seven-year continuum to support students throughout their entire college journey. Beginning in high school, we deliver free, targeted in-person and online support to students who are the first in their family to attend college. College students receive the critical combination of 1:1 advising by staff, strategic scholarship support and career mentoring to support their path all the way to college graduation.
Impact: At ScholarMatch, we believe that access to higher education changes lives. But, in our country, only 11% of low-income and first-generation college students graduate in 6 years. We know that’s not enough. At ScholarMatch, 81% of these students graduate. Our services, our volunteers, our donors, and our scholarships transform the lives of our students. And, in turn, our students transform the world we live in.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: ScholarMatch just opened a drop-in college center in Boyle Heights and we are looking for volunteers who can support during our drop-in hours and/or match with local students for a yearlong advising relationship. Volunteers who are matched with a local LA student but can’t make it to the center for a meeting, can mentor students virtually via email, text and phone calls! Volunteers commit approximately 2-4 hours a month, either checking in on their mentee or attending two of our evening college coaching nights.
Requirements: Volunteers must have earned a college degree in any field, complete a series of five online modules (at their pace and from the comfort of their home) and must pass a background check prior to working with students. For drop-in volunteers, our college coaching sessions will begin in late August and go through December, Mondays and Tuesdays from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Volunteers who are matched with a student set their own check-in schedule and meet once a month.
Additional Details: Our office is located in Boyle Heights, about 10 minutes east of Downtown Los Angeles. Parking will be available for volunteers who support our evening college drop-in hours.
Accessibility: Our parking lot is equipped with a ramp for volunteers in wheelchairs and our site is accessible for all assistive mobility devices.
