Mission or Broader Program Description:

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery’s mission is to be responsive to the human experience. Established in 1954, the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery is the longest running institution in Los Angeles devoted solely to exhibiting art. The gallery focuses on artists from Los Angeles – in particular underrepresented artists whose work may not otherwise have found a platform. Our exhibitions, educational and public programs aim to inspire conversation about the contemporary issues and ideas that resonate most with the people of Los Angeles.

On view from August 15 - September 29, Offal is a group exhibition conceived from the subject of offal (ˈôfəl,ˈäfəl) or the culture of consuming innards. The exhibition features a variety of work from forty-five Los Angeles-based contemporary artists who use traditional and unconventional techniques and media in their approach to the five overlapping themes that feed into the exhibition: labor, discard and waste, transcultural idioms, cultural retention and shame, and the abject.

In addition to the exhibition, there will also be a series of free public programs, ranging from artist talks, artmaking workshops and performances.

Impact: Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring the successful operations and maintenace of the galllery, as well as faciliating a positive and meaningful experience for all visitors.

Requirements: Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time, comfortable with speaking to visitors, have an interest in art, and at least 18 years or older.
