Quick Overview - Have you been looking for ways to give back? Becoming a mentor and giving a little of your time can make a lasting impact in a young girl's life. Join us in this quest to EMPOWER girls to be equipped, prepared and ready to face the World!
Mission Description - EmpowHer Institute's mission is to empower girls in marginalized communities through education, training, and mentorship to become confident, college and career ready. We partner with middle schools in underserved communities to deliver the EmpowHer Girls Academy Program as a fully integrated enrichment class for 7th and 8th grade girls. The combination of social and emotional learning, mentorship, and real-world experiences gives girls the tools they need to overcome challenges, stay engaged in school and graduate with a clear vision for their future.
Impact - Mentors play an integral role in helping girls stay engaged in school, set and achieve goals, and create a vision for their future. Did you know that when young people are mentored well: 98% stay in school 98% do not become teen parents 85% do not use drugs 98% avoid gang participation? You can have a positive impact in the life of a teen girl.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities - We need women volunteers who will inspire, coach and model the way for girls to be proud of themselves and to know they have what it takes to do anything they set their minds to! Volunteers sign up to be mentors for the 2019 - 2020 school year. Mentors meet with their mentees once a month at the school site, during the 60 minute EmpowHer class (note: class times vary by school site). School sites are located in Gardena, Inglewood, Korea Town, and Watts. Mentor activities are pre-planned, so all mentors have to do is show up. EmpowHer Mentor Orientation & Training dates are: August 24, 2019 and September 14, 2019 from 10am - 1pm. Mentor sessions begin October 2019 and continue through June 2020.
