Quick Overview: Volunteers will help water and maintain the Los Nogales Native Plant Nursery at the Audubon Center at Debs Park. This is a great opportunity to work outdoors, get your hands dirty, and learn about growing CA native plants.
Mission or Broader Program Description: The mission of our Center is to inspire people to experience, understand and care for the local natural world. Volunteer opportunities like this are one of the ways that we work to restore the connection between people and the land here in Los Angeles. Another one of our priorities is creating sustainable habitat for local birds, and growing/planting. CA native plants is one of the primary ways that we work to build bird friendly communities here in Debs Park.
Impact: We are a small team here at the Center and we could not manage the Los Nogales Native Plant Nursery without the help of volunteers. Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the surivival of the native plants that we propogate in the nursery. The plants that are grown in the nursery are then planted back out in the park to build the sustainable habitat for birds and other wildlife.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: Volunteers will mainly be watering the plants, "bumping up" plants (this means transplanting them to bigger cones/pots when they are ready), sterilizing cones/pots, and generally maintaining the nursery space.
Requirements: No previous experience required. Volunteers must be comfortable standing for at least an hour or two at a time. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
* Volunteers under the age of 18 will need to bring and have signed by a parent/guardian a Volunteer Agreement & Release for Minors. The form can be found on L.A. Works website Q&A section.
Additional Details: Check in is at the picnic table in the Center courtyard, a Center staff member or fellow volunteer will then walk you down to the nursery. There is a parking lot onsite, if the lot is full please park along Griffin Ave. and walk up.
