Farmers Market Outing with Seniors

Location: Santa Monica CA, 90405

Date: 9/28/2019 Spots Remaining: 0

Overview: Volunteers will take seniors from the dementia ward of the Santa Monica Convalescent Center to the farmers market by pushing them in their wheelchairs down the street. Once at the market, seniors and volunteers will enjoy conversation together, lively music, and browsing the vendor's food stands.

Broader Program Description: This opportunity is organized by Hope for Los Angeles, a ministry of Pacific Crossroads Church, which mobilizes people across the city to serve marginalized populations through community organizations in Los Angeles. Hope for LA partners with organizations serving low-income families, elderly suffering from dementia, children in the foster care system, and families, veterans, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

Impact: The heart of this opportunity is to encourage and form friendships with non-ambulatory seniors suffering from dementia and/or other health conditions. They don’t always have the opportunity to leave the center, so taking a trip to the farmers market in the sunshine and fresh air is something they look forward to every month. Sadly, some of the seniors don't receive many visitors, so having volunteer friends visit each month increases the seniors' self-worth and gives them an opportunity to receive one-on-one attention. A warm smile from a volunteer friend lifts a lonely senior's spirit and helps them cope with their condition and need to live inside of a convalescent home.

Volunteers under age 18 will need to bring a waiver signed by a parent/guardian or will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
The form can be found on L.A. Works website Q&A section.

Closed-toe shoes recommended.

Additional Details: This service opportunity occurs once per month. Spanish speakers are welcome!
