Quick Overview: Spend the weekend with the family of a child with a serious medical condition. We have so many fun camp activities like horseback riding, archery, wheelchair-accessible high ropes course, pool, boating, fishing, and more! It is a truly magical experience our campers, families and volunteers will never forget!
Mission or Broader Program Description: Every child deserves to experience the life-changing power of camp. The Painted Turtle provides year-round camp experiences for children with serious medical conditions. Located in Lake Hughes, California, The Painted Turtle is a proud member of the global SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by Paul Newman. Every aspect of the intentional and adaptive programming at Camp-from a wheelchair-friendly ropes course to exceptional on-site medical care-is designed to allow all campers to participate in all activities. Since opening in 2004, over 60,000 children and their families have attended The Painted Turtle completely free of charge.
Impact: Our Family Weekends rely 100% on volunteers to work with our families. When you volunteer, you are not just giving your time, but you are an integral part of sparking joy and easing the stresses of everyday life for families and children with chronic, life-threatening illnesses.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: We are looking for volunteers for our Family Weekends over several dates in the Fall season, where the whole family of the child with the medical condition gets to come to camp together. Volunteers work directly with our campers and families to facilitate the magic of camp and bring smiles to their faces while cheering them on in activities such as horseback riding, archery, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, woodshop, and so much more! We provide food, housing, and transportation from LAX for volunteers-so all you have to worry about is having fun with your campers and families!
