Help Distribute Food To Those In Need!
Quick Overview: Our Food Pantry distribution is part of our Family Well-Being Program. Low-income families and individuals from the community can come once a week for groceries. They select from a collection of grocery items, including a variety of fresh produce, bread, and canned goods.
Mission: Since 1972, St. Francis Center has provided relief and support to homeless and extremely low-income individuals and families in Los Angeles. Much more than a soup kitchen or a food pantry, we offer a unique range of services to sustain and empower those in need. Welcoming all with joy, dignity and compassion, we dedicate ourselves every day to Serving Hope in our community.
Impact: In 2020, the need for St. Francis Center’s services increased significantly. We experienced a staggering 70% increase in the number of visits to our pantry programs, accommodating 39,583 visits compared to 22,415 visits in 2019.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities: We've modified our programs so all are to-go distribution format. As part of the pantry program, we have our volunteers sort through donated product from 9 AM to 12 AM and make to-go pantry boxes to be distributed to families, individuals, and students in need. We also may need your help with making PB&J sandwiches and lunch bags!
Volunteers have the opportunity to help us "serve hope" in the Los Angeles community, learn about hunger and other issues facing many in the community, and build relationships with our guests, staff and fellow volunteers.
We ask that volunteers commit to volunteering weekly on a specific day, to help reduce turnover. (For example every Tuesday morning for the next month.) This consistency is most helpful to the staff and program!
If interested please sign up to volunteer, and our Development and Volunteer Associate, Ali will follow up and confirm your volunteer date along with more information and a volunteer application to complete the registration process.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing.
- Volunteers need to be able to lift boxes in excess of 20 lbs, this will require bending and lifting.
- We are happy to host volunteers ages 8+ (parent/guardian supervision required for volunteers ages 8-13).
- *Please remember to fill out a minor volunteer waiver form if minors (under 18) are attending projects. The form can be found on L.A. Works website Q&A section.
Accessibility: Our programs space is limited and we ask that all volunteers maintain caution as staff will be moving palettes in and out of the warehouse.
- In response to recent developments regarding the spread of COVID-19, also referred to as coronavirus, St. Francis Center is modifying program operations effective immediately.
We are still accepting volunteers and still remain committed to serving our guests in need and continuing to be a center of support and hope. Our priority is to take proactive steps to protect the health and safety of our guests, volunteers, staff, and supporters. You can read more about our modified programs here.
- *Court-mandated service hours will NOT be verified unless the hours have been approved by the volunteer coordinator and management. Please email to confirm court-mandated volunteer hours.*
