Quick Overview: The Koreatown Youth and Community Center (KYCC) is one of the leading organizations that plants trees in the City of Los Angeles and we can use your help! Whether it’s assisting in our free tree distributions, leading a team of volunteers, supporting our tree planting or beautification events, removing graffiti, or helping around the office, we have a job for you.
Mission or Broader Program Description: The Koreatown Youth and Community Center was established in 1975 to support a growing population of at-risk youth in Los Angeles. Today, KYCC is the leading multiservice organization in Koreatown, supporting children and their families in the areas of education, health, housing, and finances. Most of the clients served are first generation immigrants from Asia and Latin America. Committed to serving the diverse population of Koreatown, we offer all programs in Spanish, Korean and English.
Impact: Koreatown is one of the least green and most densely populated urban neighborhoods in the United States. We have limited parks and recreational space, with few healthy and mature trees. We believe that our dedication and support of inspired community actions is the most effective way to achieve meaningful and sustainable environmental change. Our Environmental Services provide training and resources for residents to beautify their neighborhood, to increase open space for families and to grow tree-lined streets in Los Angeles.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: In addition to the duties listed above, we can also use help with canvassing to get property owners to consent to planting trees, tracking trees, and monitoring trees we’ve planted in our tree database.
Requirements: Interns must be at least 18 years old, and commit to at least 12 hours per week, for a minimum of 3 months. Spanish or Korean bilingual is helpful, but not required. If this is more than you can commit to at the moment, there's other more short term opportunities with KYCC and our Environmental Service Unit here.
Additional Details: Our Environmental Services office is open 7 days a week, from 6:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Generally, speaking our community events such as tree planting, tree distribution, or clean ups occur on weekend mornings from 8:00 A.M. until noon.
