A SPECIAL VIRTUAL MLK DAY PROJECT:

  • Purchase books online for the youth at East Lake Juvenile Detention Center. Volunteers will be given a list of books to choose from that has been curated by one of their librarians.
  • Participate in a letter writing project asking elected officials to reexamine the parole budget after hearing a speaker explain how the youth parole budget has increased although detained youth have decreased.
WHY: Every day, thousands of young people in the United States are held in juvenile detention facilities while their cases are handled in court. Despite steady declines over the past two decades, 195,000 young people were placed in detention centers in 2018. Black kids are continuously overrepresented in juvenile detention centers across America. In 2013, 15% of kids and young adults in the United States were black, yet black youth represented 40% of the juvenile detention population.

  • Comfortable shopping online.
