Minecraft March on Washington: Virtual Exploration (MLK Day)

L.A. Works | http://www.laworks.com

At this time, registration is closed. Stream a tour, live at 11AM.

Tour a virtual exhibit of the historic 1963 March on Washington through the world of Minecraft to interact with Civil Rights leaders like Dr. King himself and activists who are continuing Dr. King's legacy today.

A SPECIAL MINECRAFT MLK DAY PROJECT:

  • Meet the activists from the historic 1963 March on Washington who paved the way for change against systemic racism and current activists who are continuing Dr. King's legacy today.
  • Build an exhibit of your own within in the Minecraft Java universe.

WHY: Video games, an important means for human connection, have become especially valuable during this pandemic. With 126 million people playing Minecraft monthly, we have the opportunity to leverage this platform to create the infrastructure for a whole new level of volunteer participation. This year, we'll inspire the next generation of activists by giving them a platform to listen to the voices that spoke before them and give them a space for their voices to be heard as well.

THE EXPERIENCE: Volunteers will first meet their Project Leaders in Zoom to receive a short introduction about the exhibit and troubleshoot any technical issues. Afterward, Project Leaders will give volunteers a tour of the virtual space, introduce them to non-player character versions of past and present activists, and give them a chance to build an activism-centric model of their own.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A computer, Mac, PC, or Linux; PS4/5, Switch, mobile or tablet WILL NOT WORK
  • Stable internet connection;
  • A mic and speakers or headphones for conversations; and
  • Access to Minecraft (Java Edition).
  • Please note the times listed below are PST
ACCESSIBILITY: L.A. Works firmly believes that we strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving all in service. L.A. Works is securing sponsorship to purchase as many licenses for Minecraft (Java Edition) as possible to provide to volunteers interested in joining us but do not have and cannot purchase their own license. Licenses will be provided to volunteers on a first-come, first-serve basis. After signing up, you will be asked if you want to add your name to the waitlist for a license.

LOCATION: This opportunity takes place online. You will be emailed the link to participate after signing up, and your Project Leaders will show you how to access the exhibit on the day of the event.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE: This is a part of L.A. Works’ MLK Jr. Day of Service 2021 event, our first ever multi-platform event to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy. The day-long, choose your own adventure service experience builds upon the anti-racism movement through: an interactive new March on Washington via Minecraft; virtual projects @home focused on systemic racism and advocacy actions; and a drive-in experience.
