Downtown Women's Center

http://www.downtownwomenscenter.org

Founded in 1978, the Downtown Women’s Center is the only organization in Los Angeles exclusively dedicated to addressing the needs of women overcoming poverty and homelessness in Skid Row. DWC's mission is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women. Through the Housing First model, we house women who have experienced chronic homelessness in our 119 on-site apartments and through our community-based housing program. We recognize homelessness as a public health crisis. Understanding the compounding challenges of homelessness and poor health, we take a holistic approach to women’s wellness. For women living on the streets or in night-to-night shelters, our drop-in Day Center provides a respite from the rigors of the street while also providing essential services. For homeless or formerly homeless women, barriers to employment can range from physical disabilities and mental health obstacles to a lack of formal work experience or long bouts of unemployment after job loss. Women living in Skid Row face many barriers to employment. DWC's education and job readiness resources aim to break the cycles of unemployment and homelessness for women. DWC is the only local Veterans Program that works exclusively with homeless female veterans and their children. We provide case management, federal housing vouchers, and supportive services. 2016 Impact Stats 94% housing retention rate. 103,854 meals served. 1,078 women visited our health clinic. 262 women received mental health services. 877 women participated in health educational activities 55 job placements 979 women accesses vocational education and job readiness services 10,827 one-on-one case management sessions 44 veterans housed 207 women obtained permanent housing, a 146% increase from 2015 98% housing retention rate in our Community-Based Housing
