Renter's Rights Outreach Specialist

Our Work: L.A. Works is L.A.’s largest volunteer action network.  Our mission is to make L.A. a more equitable place by empowering Angelenos to address pressing social issues through volunteerism.  

Position Overview:  The Renter’s Rights Outreach Specialist will lead a team of volunteers in going door-to-door to help renters with extremely low income apply for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.  You will also determine which areas to canvas, attend meetings to liaise with other Local Network Partners, compile data for weekly grant reports, and recruit, manage, and lead volunteers.   

Compensation:  $1000/week for 25 hours of work.  Position runs 1/24 – 3/31. 

Availability:  Exact hours are still to be determined, but you’ll need to be available weekends and some weekdays. 


  • Bilingual in Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin, Korean, Farsi, or Armenian 
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation for regular travel throughout Los Angeles County 

Preferred Skills:  (this may be in a volunteer or professional capacity) 

  • Door-to-door canvasing 
  • Data reporting 
  • Small group leadership 
  • Volunteer recruitment and management 
  • Comfort with ipads, hotspots, and general technology 
  • Ability to hit the ground running 
  • Friendly, professional, and clear communication  

Summary of Duties: 

  • Thoroughly understand and be able to answer questions on the Emergency Rental  Assistance Program 
  • Speak in-person with low-income renters about the Program 
  • Assist renters in applying via ipad 
  • Manage online volunteer posting and reply to volunteer questions 
  • Supervise a team of up to 10 drop-in volunteers per canvasing session 
  • Train volunteers day-of in proper canvasing practices 
  • Recruit bilingual volunteers 
  • Track and report data/results of canvasing sessions 
  • Attend weekly grant meetings 
  • Attend biweekly LA cohort meetings 
  • Liaise with partners to determine which areas to canvas
