L.A. Works Day 2011

Dates: 07/30/2011 - 07/30/2011

On July 30th, 2011 more than a thousand community and corporate volunteers will join together for a large-scale service project in Leimert Park Village to support the community’s efforts to make this hidden landmark an incubator for the continued development and preservation of African American art, culture, entrepreneurship and economic development in Los Angeles.

L.A. Works Day volunteer imageLeimert Park Village, the historical enclave of African and African American culture and arts in South Los Angeles, is undergoing a community revival. With a monthly Arts Walk launched through the efforts of neighborhood organizations and a homegrown music and arts festival each summer, this underserved community is working to become a hip LA destination. The village’s renaissance will get an extra boost this summer as Angelenos celebrate L.A. Works’ 20th anniversary with a day of community service and action.

Volunteers will build signage to welcome visitors to the village, create community murals, restore historic building tiles, build African drums for a youth oriented music program, plant trees, and assist nonprofits throughout the neighborhood. In addition, volunteers will revitalize the campus of Audubon Middle School. Audubon is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District and provides services to over 1,500 students in grades 6-8. As a Title I school, 40% or more of students come from families that are low-income. Because research has shown that children learn better in an environment in which they feel proud and comfortable, our volunteers will be creating murals, painting school buildings and grounds, and planting flowers, shrubs and landscaping to create a literacy garden.

With a special declaration by the City of Los Angeles recognizing L.A. Works Day of Service,
this event will highlight the contributions Angelenos have made to our community throughout L.A. Works' 20 years. A special hosted breakfast event for sponsors will bring together the civic and corporate leaders who invest their time and resouces in building a better LA. Your support to L.A. Works Day of Service will help our corporate partners reinforce a culture of service, bring together employees for a great team-building activity, and of course participate in an opportunity to give back to the local community.LAWD image
