Volunteer coordination and engagement are specialized skills.

We just made it staffable.

L.A. Works has been mobilizing volunteers across Los Angeles for 35 years. Now, through Service Leadership Staffing, the trained volunteer-management professionals we trust and have worked alongside are available to your nonprofit on a per-project basis.

WHO WE ARE

We're the Service Leadership Staffing Program, an umbrella program of L.A. Works, that sends nonprofits trained and vetted temporary employees who are absolute pros at volunteer management, volunteer coordination, and volunteer engagement. When you've got a volunteer effort to pull off, we've got people ready to jump in who genuinely love this work and know exactly how to do it.

L.A. Works strives to advance volunteerism across Los Angeles, and we do this by providing professional volunteer management capacity to nonprofit who need to manage, recruit, and engage volunteers.

Oh, and the best part for our nonprofit partners? Our temp staff are our employees. That means no workers' comp, no insurance, no payroll, no HR headaches, none of it lands on you. We handle every bit of the back-end stuff so you get to focus on your mission.

So that's us: the crew that makes sure volunteerism in L.A. is backed by mission-driven staff who know how to support your needs, so every ounce of effort you pour in actually pays off.

THE PROBLEM

Your volunteers are ready. Your team is buried.

We've all lived the other version. You line up a big volunteer day, the excitement is real, the heart is all there... and then nobody's quite sure who's running what. Volunteers stand around. The staff is overwhelmed because they already have too much on their plate. The energy fizzles. Volunteer retention becomes tougher because everything feels disorganized.  That's the gap we exist to close, with temp employees who walk in already knowing how to turn a room full of willing hands into something that truly delivers.

"We don't need more volunteers. We need someone to run the day so my team can actually do their job." — A nonprofit executive director, every single week.

THE SOLUTION

A staffing service built for your specific needs

Service Leadership Staffing is not a general staffing agency, and generic staffing agencies don't always screen for nonprofit needs. We place trained, mission-aligned, volunteer-management professionals who understand nonprofits and know how to make a service day go right. Every temp employee on our roster came to us through the volunteer ecosystem, and most have worked alongside the L.A. Works staff on our own programs.  Volunteer management, volunteer engagement, and volunteer coordination are real skills, and they're our entire business. And your mission deserves a specialist.

THE PROCESS

1. Complete the intake form for your quote

2. Sign the service agreement

3. We draft your scope of work

4. You're matched with a temp employee

5. The temp employee shows up ready to work

WHY L.A. WORKS

We've been doing this work for 35 years.

  1. We understand your need. We have the same constraints, same culture, same mission. We share your world. We don't sell to it.

  2. Volunteer expertise. Volunteer mobilization is our core business, not a service line we added.

  3. Built-in systems. You can bypass the whole HR process because we do everything on our end.

  4. No lock-in. Let the quality of the work earn the relationship.

  5. Mission alignment. L.A. Works in a nonprofit, so every dollar you spend strengthens L.A.'s nonprofit ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions partners actually ask.

Q. We have a tight budget. Is this really for us?

A. Our model is built for nonprofits, not corporations. You only pay for hours actually worked. No retainers, no minimums, no surprise fees. One well-run event with a trained Service Leader often pays for itself in volunteer retention alone.

Q. What if the Service Leader isn't a good fit?

A. Your L.A. Works coordinator is available throughout every engagement. If a concern arises during a placement, we address it then, not after. Our Scope of Work sets expectations clearly so misalignment is rare. If a replacement is needed, we identify one.

Q. We've tried staffing agencies before. How is this different?

A. We're not a typical staffing agency. We're a nonprofit that specifically trains and places volunteer-management professionals, a skill set no general agency screens for. And every dollar you spend supports our broader mission rather than a private company's margins.

Q. Who is the Service Leader actually employed by?

A. L.A. Works. Every Service Leader is a W-2 employee of L.A. Works, not your organization, and not an independent contractor. We handle payroll, taxes, workers' compensation, and all employment compliance. You direct the work; we handle the employment.

Q. How quickly can a placement happen?

A. Most placements fill within 2 to 3 weeks of signed agreement, depending on role complexity, volume, and any specialized clearances required. Larger engagements may need more lead time. We'll surface that during scoping.

Q. Do we need to commit to a long-term contract?

A. No. The master Service Agreement governs the partnership; individual Statements of Work govern each placement. Start with one event. Add more when you're ready. There's no minimum.
