This year marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our nation. While many Americans remember where they were that day, an entire generation has grown up with no memory of the attacks.

 

In the days and weeks that followed, we witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of unity, compassion, and service. We also saw the fear, prejudice, and discrimination that can emerge when we turn against people we see as different from ourselves. Twenty-five years later, we have the opportunity to remember both and choose what we carry forward.
 

The September 11 National Day of Service & Remembrance invites people of all ages and backgrounds to honor those who lost their lives and the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way through meaningful acts of service. Volunteering gives us a way to move beyond fear and division, to recognize our shared humanity, and strengthen the bonds that hold our communities together.

This year, L.A. Works is partnering with 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps to mobilize volunteers for a week-long series of service opportunities across Los Angeles. Through hands-on projects supporting first responders, local nonprofits, and communities recovering from disaster, we can honor the past by choosing compassion in the present, and help build a stronger, more connected Los Angeles.
