About L.A. Works:

L.A. Works unites Angelenos and inspires action for an equitable LA. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer action center, we create and manage hands-on community service projects to mobilize volunteers throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Required dates:

Training days - June 12, 13, 14 (Downtown area)

Camp days - June 17-21, 24-28 (Week 1 Downtown, Week 2 Culver City)

Post Camp Cleanup - July 1 (Downtown area)

*possible additional required Zoom meetings

 

Essential job functions: The list that follows is not intended to be comprehensive; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major responsibilities of the position. Incumbents may not be required to perform all roles listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise and inspire Campers: You will be responsible for leading 8-10 campers of mixed ages and genders throughout the day’s activities. Inspiring them to actively participate and have fun.

  2. Facilitate Engaging Activities: Lead a variety of fun and meaningful activities, including games, arts and crafts, nonprofit service projects, and group bonding activities. Can include getting wet or dirty.

  3. Ensure Camper Safety: Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all campers, closely supervising activities both on-site and during field trips, and adhering to safety protocols.

  4. Assist with Set Up and Clean Up: Prepare the camp each day by setting up equipment and project stations. Assist with cleaning and organizing throughout as well as at the end of the day. Can include carrying heavy boxes or tables.

  5. Camper Check-In and Orientation: Welcome campers and their families each morning during check-in. Provide information and support to ensure campers feel comfortable and excited about their day ahead.

  6. Mentor and Lead with Positivity and Problem-solving: Foster positive relationships with campers, acting as a role model and mentor. Provide guidance to help campers develop social skills, confidence, and independence. Work together with fellow counselors to create a supportive and uplifting environment where challenges are met with creativity and teamwork. Model empathy and friendliness.

  7. Participate in Training: Engage in comprehensive pre-camp training focused on camp policies, procedures, emergency protocols, leadership skills, and camp activities.
     

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for working with children and a passion for creating engaging camp experiences.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience working with youth in a camp, school, or recreational setting is preferred but not required.

  • Must be at least 16 years old and able to pass a background check.

Additional requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds

  • Camp day is 8:30-4:30 Monday - Friday

  • Criminal history check prior to hire and Livescan

  • Any and all other duties assigned by the supervisor.

 

Classification and salary: Camp FAVE Day Camp Counselor is a temporary non-exempt employee of L.A. Works, is employed at-will, and reports directly to Beth Albrecht. As an employee of L.A. Works, the Camp FAVE Day Camp Counselor is subject to the policies and procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook. Targeted hiring salary is $17/hour.
